Creative Economies in Townships (CET)

South Africa's townships are relics of the apartheid regime. The effects of past neglect are reflected in the lack of resources, infrastructure and high unemployment, among other things. In view of these challenges, entrepreneurship is seen as a key factor for job creation and economic growth.
The project "Creative Economies in Townships" (CET) has set itself the goal of utilising the great potential of the creative industries and thus contributing to combating high youth unemployment. The project aims to design and implement formats in townships for the development of career prospects in the creative sector. This can be the generation of income through self-employment and entrepreneurial activity or the development and transfer of skills to help young people find long-term employment.

In partnership with well-established township hubs, the project will conceptualize interventions for promoting the creative industry to access new markets and provide support to the cultural and creative infrastructure of townships.

The project is aimed at young people between 18 and 35 years of age, especially women who are active in the creative industries in townships.

On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) and the Goethe-Institut promote the emerging market of cultural and creative industries in Africa and in the Middle East.
