On behalf of the European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education, the Goethe-Institut, together with the organisations Idea Consult, Inforelais and Values of Culture & Creativity, produced a study on the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on the cultural and creative industries. The study Study “Cultural and Creative Sectors in Post-Covid-19 Europe – Crisis Effects and Policy Recommendations” was published in February 2021 and contains a number of recommendations for action to support the cultural and creative industries.
Key findings:
Already fragile before 2020, the organisational structures and working practices of creative professionals will fall victim to a chain reaction resulting from the pandemic, severely damaging the economic and social situation of the sector, especially in venue and visitor-focused areas such as the performing arts and cultural heritage.
As government support focuses on emergency measures and not (yet) on revitalisation and innovation, the study proposes three guiding measures: 1) fair working conditions, 2) a European framework for digital culture, and 3) recognition of the central role of the cultural and creative sector as an integral part of an innovative and cohesive society.
