About the Residency
Together with Musicboard Berlin, Nusasonic will grant a two-month residency to one Singapore-based musician, who should work virtually and in tandem with an artist based in Berlin. Nusasonic is a joint project between Playfreely/BlackKaji (Singapore), Yes No Klub (Yogyakarta), WSK Festival for the Recently Possible (Manila), CTM Festival (Berlin) and Goethe-Institut that aims to foster dialogue between musicians within Southeast Asia with connections to Europe and beyond.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the 2021 residency will take place as a virtual tandem residency supporting a collaborative digital project between a Berlin-based artist:in and a Singapore-based artist:in. The aim of the residency is to identify common and complementary interests between the two artists that can serve as a springboard for the development of a joint artistic work to be presented at the end of the residency.
Targeted Candidates
- Musicians who live and work in Berlin or Singapore.
- Musicians who move between experimental pop, club music, sound art, noise, improvisation or intermedia performance.
- Musicians who work or are currently developing work at the intersection of film, video, games, interactive media, programming or installation, and musicians who use research-based practices.
- Musicians who possess a high degree of independence and initiative, who are interested in the potential of online production and presentation, and who are open to interdisciplinary exchange and collaborative work.
Duration of Residency
The duration of the virtual residency is eight weeks. It will take place between October and December 2021, with public presentations in early 2022. The exact periods will be agreed between the selected artists and the hosting organisations.
Benefits of the Residency
Weekly stipend of 250 EUR per artist (2,000 EUR per artist for the entire residency period)
Application
Both artists will be selected in separate open calls and supported in their joint creative process by the Berlin CTM Festival and Singaporean band The Observatory, who run the experimental music performance series BlackKaji and the festival Playfreely. The two host organisations will support the process through facilitation, feedback and access to knowledge and expertise from their wider network. The resulting work will be presented publicly online or screened at the respective host:ing festivals/events in Singapore and Berlin, if the pandemic situation allows for a face-to-face presentation.
Before the residency is confirmed, both artists will be consulted on the choice of their tandem partner to check mutual agreement on the collaboration.
