Pop music in Germany to 1989

German pop music tends to be viewed abroad as second-rate. But after getting off to a shaky start in the 1950s, a rich and diverse music scene soon took shape, and its most illustrious exemplars were to gain world recognition.

Since German reunification, German pop music has prospered and developed a more natural rapport with the use of German lyrics. Nowadays anything goes, including everything from German rock and German rap to German reggae.

In November 1981 Kollaps appeared, the first album of the Einstürzende Neubauten. It became the first manifesto of a band project that inspired the international art world.
