Early Music from Germany – History

Middle Ages and Renaissance
Music in German-speaking territories

In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance gradually a separate vocal and instrumental repertoire emerged. Especially the Reformation had far-reaching consequences.

Changing Times Around 1600

Baroque
Baroque Brilliance

Composers of the 17th and 18th century in German-speaking countries were open to the fascination of Italian and French models, and created a diverse and personal musical language: a buoyant, dense and tightly interwoven network came into being.

The Bach Family
Johann Sebastian Bach and the “musical Bach family”

In the history of music Johann Sebastian Bach played such an important role that it can hardly be underestimated. But his artistry must be seen as an integral part of a larger family and thus of a certain historical tradition.
